Bitumen is an organic substance derived from crude oil. It has a wide range of heavy organic matter such as asphaltene. Therefore, this complex compound does not have a unique density. The specific gravity range of bitumen is between 0.97 to 1.02.

There are different grades of bitumen each type of grade is selected as per requirement. In general the density of bitument lies between 1000kg/m3 to 1600kg/m3

Bitumen has a unique density in comparison to other byproducts of crude oil. Due to the presence of large hydrocarbon molecules known as asphaltenes and resins, which are present in lighter oils but are highly concentrated in bitumen, bitumen has become useful material in binding stones and sands for road construction.

Density is an important indicator of bitumen’s mass and helps us understand the commercial value of it. In general, the density of bitumen is between 0.97 to 1.02 grams per cubic centimeterĀ (g/cm) at a normal temperature.

Since various grades of bitumen have various densities, it is better to check specifications tables of bitumen.

The ratio of the weight of a substance to its volume is called its specific weight. However, density is the ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume. Density is independent of the gravity acceleration, nevertheless, the specific weight is affected by the gravity acceleration of the earth.

Calculating the weight of bitumen inside the reservoirs and tankers in the road construction sites which is restored in terms of volume is among the main reasons to know the bitumen density. The bitumen density measurement test is carried out on the basis of the ASTM D70 standard. In fact, the specific weight (density) of each substance is an interface between its weight (mass) and volume.Ā The bitumen density calculation is carried out on the basis of Archimedes’ principle.

In accordance with the definition of bitumen density, the ratio of the mass of a definite volume of bitumen to the water of the same volume at a known temperature.

Nickle Crucible and pycnometer are among the common methods in calculating the specific weight of bitumen (bitumen density).
