Dead Loads:-Dead loads are the permanent loads which are carried by structure during its entire life span.

These loads occur mainly due to the self-weight of the structural members, fittings, fixed partitions, fixed equipment, etc.

Dead loads are calculated by estimating the quantity of each structural member and then multiplying it with the unit weight of that specific material.

For suppose The column is made of Reinforced cement concrete and having a length, breadth and depth as shown in figure

then the dead load of the column is

The total volume of concrete = 3 x 0.4 x 0.4 = 0.48m

^{3}The dead load of the column = 0.48m

^{3}x 25KN/m^{3}= 12KNLive load:The real time load on structure is called live load.

As per IS875 Part-II, we consider 3 KN/m

For the purpose of structural design …Dead load (DL) are calculated by using already established Density of materials ( For example DL of Reinforced RC slab of 250mm thick = 25 x0 .250 = 6.25 kN/m2). Mostly the self weight of elements are automatically be calculated by Standard Structural softwares (Viz ETABS/SAP…) if the thickness is defined.

For Live Load LL you may have to refer to the relevant codes ACI/BS/IS … ( For example LL for office buildings 3 kN/m2 …ACI-318, Load on Ramps 5 kN/m2…etc).

Dead load = (Volume of Material ) X (Density of Material)

For example

the dead load of column size 400X400mm and height 3.0M

then the dead load of the column is
